Sustainability & Community Impact

At the Baliem Valley Highlands Society, we believe that our presence in this sacred and fragile land is a privilege, not a right. Our license to operate is earned daily through an unwavering commitment to sustainable practices that protect the environment, preserve cultural heritage, and provide tangible, long-term benefits to the local communities. Sustainability is not an afterthought or a marketing slogan; it is a core operational principle integrated into every aspect of our journeys, from planning to execution. This commitment is a cornerstone of Our Methodology.

Environmental Stewardship

The Baliem Valley and the surrounding Jayawijaya Mountains are a region of incredible biodiversity, bordering the Lorentz National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. We take our responsibility to protect this ecosystem with the utmost seriousness.

  • Carbon-Conscious Aviation: Air travel is unavoidable in Papua. We take two key steps to mitigate its impact. First, we design itineraries to maximize ground time and minimize short, non-essential flights. Second, we partner with Rimba Raya Biodiversity Reserve, a verified Indonesian carbon offset project, to offset 150% of the calculated carbon emissions for all our charter flights.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastics Policy: We have a strict ban on single-use plastic bottles, bags, and containers on all our tours. Guests are provided with high-quality reusable water bottles, and all water is purified in camp using advanced filtration systems. All supplies are transported in reusable containers.
  • Waste Management Protocol: We operate on a ‘pack-in, pack-out’ principle. All non-biodegradable waste generated during our treks and in our camps is meticulously collected, sorted, and transported back to Jayapura for proper disposal and recycling where facilities exist. We leave no trace.
  • Water Conservation: We utilize low-impact camp designs and train our staff and guests on mindful water usage. We use only biodegradable, phosphate-free soaps and cleaning products to protect local water sources.

Community Empowerment & Fair Partnership

Our goal is to create a tourism model where the local communities are the primary beneficiaries. We are committed to creating economic opportunities that are both sustainable and culturally affirming.

  • Local Employment Mandate: We are committed to a policy where a minimum of 80% of our on-the-ground team—including guides, porters, camp staff, and drivers—are hired from the local Dani, Lani, and Yali communities.
  • Fair Wage & Benefits Guarantee: All our local staff are paid a wage that is significantly above the regional average. We also provide them with professional-grade equipment, safety training, and coverage under the national BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Workers’ Social Security) program.
  • The Highlands Fund: 5% of the net profit from every journey is contributed directly to our independently-audited ‘Highlands Fund.’ This fund is managed in consultation with a council of village elders and supports community-prioritized projects, such as funding for local health clinics (Puskesmas), educational materials for schools, or maintenance of vital infrastructure like suspension bridges.
  • Support for Local Enterprise: We source all possible provisions—fresh produce, supplies, and handicrafts—from local markets and cooperatives in Wamena. We facilitate direct, commission-free opportunities for our guests to purchase authentic Noken bags and other crafts, ensuring 100% of the revenue goes to the artisan.

Cultural Preservation

We see ourselves as custodians of the stories and traditions of the Baliem Valley, and we design our experiences to be respectful, non-intrusive, and supportive of cultural continuity.

  • Itinerary Co-Design: All our cultural interactions are planned in direct consultation with the relevant village elders (Kepala Suku). We schedule our visits to not interfere with local ceremonies, markets, or agricultural activities.
  • Authentic, Not Performative: We do not ask communities to stage performances. Instead, we facilitate genuine opportunities for our guests to respectfully observe and participate in daily life, fostering a more meaningful and dignified exchange.
  • Guest Education: Before arrival, every guest receives a comprehensive briefing, prepared by our cultural experts, on local customs, etiquette, and responsible photography to ensure all interactions are respectful.

Our commitment to sustainability is an ongoing journey of learning and improvement. We are dedicated to proving that luxury travel can be a powerful force for good, creating a positive and lasting legacy in one of the world’s most extraordinary places.
