About Baliem Valley Highlands Society

For years the highlands of Papua, home to the Dani, Lani and Yali peoples, were reachable only by the most determined explorers — often at the cost of comfort, safety and genuine cultural respect.

We set up Baliem Valley Highlands Society as a bridge: between adventure and comfort, and between our guests and the valley’s communities, built on mutual respect and tangible community support.

We operate under Juara Holding Group, working from Bali across Indonesia since 2015. The group’s portfolio spans resources, logistics and hospitality.

That operational backbone — planning, provisioning, filtered water, satellite communication and emergency medical support — is what makes travel in a remote valley calm and safe.

Guests fly from Sentani (Jayapura) to Wamena Airport (WMX), landing in the heart of the valley. From there our team handles every transfer, to expedition camps or small lodges that suit the landscape, with meals prepared from fresh local ingredients where possible.

Our guides, many of them local Papuans, act as cultural bridges and explain traditions, ceremonies and daily life.

You might share a traditional pig feast, join a weaving workshop or trek to a remote village — each arranged with village elders and with respect for local custom and privacy.

More than 80% of our on-the-ground team are local Papuans. We pay fair wages, buy from local artisans and support community-led education and health initiatives.

The valley sits at around 1,600 m and is a fragile ecosystem. We follow a strict leave-no-trace policy, manage waste carefully and brief staff and guests on responsible practice.
