Our methodology

Our Evaluation Methodology

How we vet every guide, airline, lodge and transport provider before they become part of a Baliem Valley journey.

Five pillars

The five pillars of evaluation

A partner must meet our minimum threshold in all five before joining our network.

01

Safety & compliance

Our non-negotiable foundation. We inspect aircraft, vehicles and equipment, and review maintenance logs, emergency plans and staff training.

02

Authenticity & respect

No “human safaris”. We look for real community partnership, respected guides and experiences drawn from daily life, agreed with village elders.

03

Service standard

Discreet, attentive staff with good English; clean bedding and good food; the ability to handle personal requests in a remote setting.

04

Sustainability & impact

We review waste, water, energy and single-use plastic, and favour partners who hire locally and buy from local markets.

05

Reliability & logistics

Track record, clear communication during weather delays, and real backup plans for flight cancellations and road closures.

Audit & review

Evaluation never stops

01

Initial vetting

A full review against the five pillars, including document checks and interviews with the partner’s management.

02

Site inspection

An unannounced, in-person visit by a member of our senior team to experience the service first-hand.

03

Annual re-evaluation

Every partner in our network is formally re-audited every 12 months to make sure standards hold.

04

Continuous feedback

We ask for and analyse feedback from clients and on-the-ground guides, so any drop in quality is caught quickly. Every client’s post-trip notes feed into the next journey.

05

Seeing it on the ground

Our evaluators, often expedition leaders themselves, watch protocols in action — from pre-flight checks on Wamena’s airstrip to hygiene in a remote kitchen.

They test guides’ cultural knowledge and language, check ground transport across rough terrain, and review medical evacuation plans and communication systems.

06

Partners, not vendors

Our partners are collaborators rooted in valley life. Those long-standing relationships give us real-time insight into local conditions, cultural nuance and the ethics of tourism.

Evaluation is not a one-time event. It is a continuous cycle of verification.

Methodology FAQ

How we decide who to trust

The short version of our vetting process.

01 How do you choose guides, airlines and lodges?

Each is assessed against five pillars — safety, authenticity, service, sustainability and reliability — and must meet our minimum threshold in all five.

02 Which pillar matters most?

Safety and compliance. It is our non-negotiable foundation and the factor we weight most heavily.

03 How often are partners re-checked?

Every partner is formally re-audited every 12 months, and client and guide feedback is reviewed continuously in between.

04 Do you arrange staged cultural performances?

No. We favour experiences that arise from daily life and local tradition, and we consult village elders so our presence is welcome.
