Daily life, up close

  • Salt harvesting

Women carry brackish spring water in bamboo tubes and dry it on banana leaves; the salt is traded for pigs.

  • Bakar batu

Pork, sweet potato and greens cooked on superheated stones — up to four hours, for births, marriages and peace-making.

  • Noken weaving

The hand-woven net bags women carry from their heads.

  • Stone axes & bows

Craftsmen at work on the last morning — souvenirs bought here support the village.

  • Valley birdlife

Parrots and hornbills along the river, and sometimes a bird of paradise.

Trip FAQ

Before you commit

Fitness, group size and what to expect on the ceremony day.

01 How fit do I need to be?

The main trek is about 8 km with around 150 m of elevation gain, manageable for most fitness levels. The village visit adds a 30-minute walk.

02 How big is the group?

No more than six guests, so village visits and the bakar batu stay small.

03 Is the ceremony guaranteed?

A ceremony is planned for day four, but its form depends on local custom and timing — often a pig feast or a warrior-traditions demonstration lasting four to six hours.

04 When is Wamena market busiest?

It runs from about 7:00 to 17:00, with peak trading between 9:00 and 13:00.

05 How do I get to Wamena?

By air from Jayapura — the flight takes about 45 minutes. The return flight on day five usually leaves around 11:00.
