01

April–May: early dry season

The dry season begins and trail conditions improve by the day, with some residual rain showers. International visitor numbers are low, making it a good-value window.

  • 14–22°C in the highlands
  • Occasional showers
  • Low visitor traffic
02

June: pre-peak

Peak conditions begin: dry, stable trails and crystal-clear days, with fewer visitors than high summer. Highland temperatures sit at 12–20°C.

June brings the coldest mornings of the year — you will want a fleece.

03

July–August: peak

Peak Baliem conditions: dry trails, clear days and 13–22°C. Visitor traffic peaks, but Baliem stays uncrowded next to Bali or Komodo.

Pig festivals are sometimes scheduled, often with only 1–2 weeks’ notice.

04

September: late peak

Peak conditions continue with slightly warmer days of 15–23°C. Pig festivals are more commonly scheduled, and visitor traffic starts to ease.

05

October: shoulder

The last reliable trekking month. Conditions are still good but variable, with a slight chance of early rain showers late in the month.

06

November–March: no trekking

Heavy rainy season. Trails deteriorate quickly and some homestays close for the season. Local festivals continue, but access for international visitors is poor — avoid this window for trekking.

07

Pig festival timing

Traditional pig festivals are scheduled by village elders, timed to sweet-potato harvests, marriages or conflict resolutions. Visitors can sometimes attend, with explicit village permission.

We confirm the festival schedule 2–3 weeks before departure when possible.
