Why Sentani Matters

A cultural stop most travellers fly past

Sentani airport (DJJ) sits on the lake, and most international travellers connect through it on the way to Wamena. Lake Sentani is one of the world’s largest tropical lakes, home to the Sentani, Ormu and Apawer peoples, and its island villages offer cultural depth without a single trek day.

  • Bark-cloth painting on Asei Island
  • Stilt houses at Yoboi
  • Canoe building at Khalkhote
  • No trekking required

Sentani FAQ

Before you add the lake

Logistics and etiquette for the side trip.

01 Do I need to trek at Lake Sentani?

No. The island villages are reached by boat, so the side trip asks for no trekking at all.

02 How do I reach Asei Island?

By boat from Sentani — about 45 minutes to Asei Pulau village.

03 What are the boat rules?

Don’t stand up suddenly, bring rain protection because lake weather changes quickly, and follow the captain’s instructions.

04 What etiquette applies?

The same as in the Baliem Valley: modest dress, ask before taking photos, and a small cash gift of $15–25.

05 Who is this side trip for?

Travellers with a cultural focus who want more than the highlands, without adding trek days.
